Elementary  School Students

Multi-subject Web Sites

 

  • First School has some fun preschool activities and crafts.

  • Everything Preschool is a resource for educators and parents with over 30,000 preschool activities, including lesson plans, craft plans, and coloring pages.

  • Education.com is a free reference site for students, teachers, and parents. Education.com provides expert advice, features, columns, thousands of reference articles, and a community for parents of pre-school to high school students. Find parenting and educational resources, advice and tips here.

 

  • Fact Monster is a free reference site for students, teachers, and parents. Get homework help and find facts on thousands of subjects, including sports, entertainment, geography, history, biography, education, and health. Brainiac also recommends the online flashcards and other learning tools found on this user-friendly site.

 

  • Mensa for Kids is a terrific site for kids to explore - including monthly features, games, and educational activities that kids will love! Have fun!

 

  • SuperTeacherWorksheets.com provides links to free math worksheets, printable grammar sheets, multiplication facts practice, creative writing prompts, math word problems, manuscript printing practice, and much more. Some areas on this site can send you to advertisements for teaching and learning materials, but the free materials are clearly listed on the home page. Scroll down and look at the far left-hand column to find quick links to various subject-areas.

 

  • Teach-nology.com offers free access to thousands of worksheets and teaching resources in language arts, math, arts and humanities, social studies, science, music and physical education. Some areas on this site require a nominal registration fee, but there are plenty of high quality materials available for free.

 

Language Arts

 

  • Mrs. Perkins' Dolch Words provides the list of 220 common sight words that children should know by the end of first grade, along with activities, worksheets, and other resources designed to help teach the words.

 

  • K12 Reading provides the list of 1000 "Fry Words." The Fry word list or "instant words" are widely accepted to contain the most used words in reading and writing. The list is divided into ten levels and then divided into groups of twenty-five words, based on frequency of use and difficulty. 

 

  • Reading Rockets provides research, tips, and strategies to parents and educators for promoting and teaching early literacy.

 

Math

 

  • IXL Math This is a fanstastic site with unlimited math questions in more than 1,000 topics. Brainiac loves this site because the site is attractive, user-friendly, and makes it easy to see what skills should be learned at each grade level. Another bonus is that this site contains quick links to the math standards set for each state, by grade level.

 

  • MathDrills.com includes over 6000 free worksheets with answer keys. Worksheets include drill for elementary, middle, and high school students.

 

 

  • Multiplication.com has numerous resources to help students master multiplication. What is unique about this site is that it explains the pros and cons of various strategies that parents might use to help their children memorize the multiplication tables. If rote memorization is not working for your child, you might find this site very helpful.

 

  • Superkids has customizable math worksheets that provide practice and answer sheets for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, order of operation, fractions, percents, and telling time.

 

Science

 

  • Cool Magnet Man is a fun site that explains basic principles of magnets and magnetism to students, and also suggests numerous fun experiments.

 

Social Studies and Geography

 

  • SoftSchools Geography Games presents some excellent resources, including fun online quizzes, to help students learn basic geography. Hey parents, see if you can beat your child's score on the States quiz!

 

  • World Atlas has terrific outline maps to help students learn continents, countries, and states. Quiz maps are printable and answer keys are provided.
